How Does It Work?

How it works depends on the type of cell phone plan you have:

  • unlimited incoming; or
  • favourite five.

Unlimited Incoming

If you have a cell phone calling plan that permits you an unlimited number of incoming calls, then when you sign up for Celocity and call one of our local access numbers, the call will appear to ring busy. Because the call did not go through, your cell phone company will not bill you. We, however, will have noted your Caller ID and will call you right back. When you answer you will hear a prompt. Enter the number you wish to dial at anytime (you do not have to wait for the end of the prompt) and you will be connected.

Because your cell phone company sees this as an incoming call, you are not billed.

Favourite Five

If you have a cell phone calling plan that permits you unlimited calls to up to five favourite numbers you specify, all you do is add our local access number nearest you and as soon as that is effective with your cell phone company*, just call that access number -- we'll answer the phone and let you type in whatever number you want to reach.

Because all your calls appear to be going to one of your favourite five numbers, you are not billed.

* Note that with some cell phone companies, changes to your favourite-five number do not become effective until the start of your next billing cycle. Always make sure our access number has become part of your active favourite-five list before calling it otherwise you will be billed by your cell phone company.

How much can I save?

The exact amount depends on your current calling plan, but based on the standard per-minute costs charged by Bell, Rogers, and Telus for local and long-distance calling:

  • even if you only make one local call a day with Celocity, you can save $22 per month; and
  • even if you only make one long distance call a day with Celocity, you can save $40 per month.

See the details on our Do The Math! webpage.

Is this legal?

Of course! None of the cell phone agreements we have seen have any prohibition against using call-back or redialing services. The cell phone companies may not like us, but they haven't banned us.

Obviously this might change in the future, and you, as the cell phone owner, are ultimately responsible for ensuring that your cell phone use is in accordance with your agreement with your cell phone service provider.

Why Celocity

Why should you consider Celocity over other service providers?

  • quality -- your calls travel over premium routes for highest call quality
  • quality -- call processing is done in Canada -- many service providers send your calls to the US or Europe for processing even before routing them to the final destination, adding delays and decreasing call quality
  • reliability -- Celocity's parent company was one of the first hosted IP telephony service providers in Canada.
  • reliability -- Celocity owns and operates its own call switching equipment (unlike other suppliers who contract this out and have little control over how well it works)

But we're not satisfied with the above. We're working hard to make Celocity even better. Expect to hear announcements of the following features being added over the weeks and months to come:

  • programmable Caller ID -- hide your cell phone number and make your outbound cell phone calls as if they are from your office or home number -- or no number at all!
  • speed dial -- program up to 10 numbers that can be dialled with a single digit
